Chapter 01

What Is the Global Talent Visa?

The Global Talent visa is a UK immigration route designed for individuals who are recognised as leaders or emerging leaders in specific fields. It replaced the Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) visa in February 2020.

Unlike other work visa routes, the Global Talent visa does not require a job offer or a sponsor. This gives holders complete freedom to work for any employer, be self-employed, or set up their own company in the UK.

The visa is initially granted for up to 5 years and can be extended. Holders may apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (settlement) after 3 years if they meet the qualifying criteria.

Who Is It For?

The Global Talent visa is available to individuals working in these sectors:

Eligible Endorsing Bodies

Before applying for the visa, you must first obtain an endorsement from the relevant body for your field.

Chapter 04

Eligibility Self-Assessment Checklist

Use this checklist to evaluate whether you may qualify for a Global Talent endorsement. Tick all that apply to your profile.

Mandatory Criteria
Optional Criteria — Digital Technology
Optional Criteria — Science & Research

Scoring Guide

Mandatory + 4 or more optional: Strong candidate — high probability of endorsement

Mandatory + 2–3 optional: Good candidate — endorsement likely with strong evidence

Fewer than 2 optional: May need additional evidence development before applying

Chapter 05

Evidence Preparation Guide

Your endorsement application will be assessed primarily on the evidence you submit. The quality and relevance of your evidence is critical.

1. Recommendation Letters (3 required)

2. Published Work and Citations

3. Awards and Recognition

4. Business and Product Impact

Evidence Formatting Tips

Each piece of evidence should be clearly labelled and dated. Include brief context explaining why each item is significant. Organise evidence by criteria category, not chronologically. Focus on quality over quantity.

Chapter 06

Personal Statement Template

Your personal statement is your opportunity to present a cohesive narrative about your career. Recommended structure (1,000 words maximum):

Paragraph 1 — Introduction

State your name, current role, and field of expertise. Summarise why you are applying and which category (Exceptional Talent or Exceptional Promise).

Paragraph 2 — Career Overview

Brief chronological overview of your career, focusing on key milestones that demonstrate your trajectory as a leader or emerging leader.

Paragraph 3 — Key Achievement 1

Describe your most significant contribution. Be specific: include metrics, outcomes, and scale of impact.

Paragraph 4 — Key Achievement 2

A different aspect of your expertise (e.g., technical innovation vs. business impact).

Paragraph 5 — Industry Recognition

How your work has been recognised by peers and the wider industry. Reference awards, publications, speaking invitations.

Paragraph 6 — Future Plans in the UK

What you plan to do in the UK and how your work will contribute to the economy, research landscape, or cultural sector.

Paragraph 7 — Conclusion

Reiterate why you meet the endorsement criteria and express your commitment to contributing to the UK.

Chapter 08

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Based on over 400 Global Talent applications handled by Sterling Law, these are the most common mistakes:

1 Choosing the Wrong Endorsing Body

Ensure your field of work aligns with the endorsing body's remit. If your work spans multiple fields, choose the body where your evidence is strongest.

2 Weak Personal Statement

Be specific, concise, and ensure every sentence adds value. Avoid jargon without explanation.

3 Generic Recommendation Letters

Brief your referees on the endorsement criteria and suggest specific points they should address.

4 Insufficient Evidence of Impact

You must show your work had impact. Include metrics: revenue generated, users reached, papers cited.

5 Ignoring the Criteria

Your application should directly address each criterion with specific evidence.

6 Submitting Too Much Evidence

A carefully curated selection of your strongest evidence is more effective than volume.

7 Poor Evidence Organisation

Label every document clearly, include a table of contents, and group evidence by criteria.

8 Applying Without Professional Review

Having an immigration solicitor review your application significantly increases your chances of success.

9 Underestimating Timelines

Recommendation letters take time. Start planning at least 4–6 months before you need the visa.

10 Not Addressing Gaps

If there is a gap in your evidence, address it proactively in your personal statement.
